Vicky Pattison hits back at accusation she’s ‘piggy backing’ off of Geordie Shore name with her new wedding series as she fumes ‘it’s wild to reduce an entire region to piece of reality TV’

Vicky Pattison has hit back at an accusation from a fan that she is ‘piggy backing’ off of Geordie Shore, the show which brought her to fame, with her new TV series.

The TV personality, 36, recently tied the knot with her husband Ercan Ramadan in two romantic ceremonies, which were captured on camera for E4’s new series, Vicky Pattison: My Big Fat Geordie Wedding.

The show will begin airing on Wednesday, and will see the happy couple getting officially hitched at Marylebone Town Hall in August, surrounded by their loved ones, before having a bigger wedding day in Puglia last month.

But in the run up to her TV series, Vicky was hit by accusations that she was trying to profit off of the Geordie Shore name, by calling the series My Big Fat Geordie Wedding, seemingly at odds with her desire to distance herself from the show.

She starred on the MTV series from 2011 until 2014, with the show being infamous for its heavy binge drinking, dramatic clashes and wild nights out.

Speaking about her time on the show following her exit, Vicky has admitted that it was a painful period of her life and said she had ‘lost herself’ in trying to play up to her party girl persona.

In June, she told Matt Willis on his On The Mend podcast that the show brought out her worst qualities and she went on to escalate those behaviours as an ‘armour’.

And in 2022, she told BBC Breakfast that she struggles to watch old scenes of her on the show, saying that looking back she is ‘mortified’ and was ‘never a nice drunk’.

Vicky admitted: ‘I think it’s a huge transitional period for anyone between your early 20s and your early 30s, but I did my growing up in the public eye which forces you to grow up a lot faster.

‘There’s real elements of myself and who I was then or at least who I was becoming that I’m really not proud of and I’m very pleased I’ve managed to charter a different course for myself.’

On Monday, the reality TV star replied to one fan accusing her of ‘piggy backing’ off the show, arguing she had ‘never once disparaged the show itself or the cast’ and clarifying that MTV did not ‘invent the term “Geordie”‘.

Geordie is a dialect spoken in the the Tyneside region of northeast England and is also used as a nickname for a person of the same region around Newcastle.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Vicky screenshot the fan’s comment and her reply with the caption: ‘I’m just going to leave this here for anyone who’s confused.

‘No shade to the person commenting but this narrative needs correcting – for my own sanity and just to clarify for the the people who are confused and think MTV invented the term “geordie” SPOILER ALERT: They did not!’

The fan in question had written: ‘I LOVE Vicki and god she looks stunning!! But I don’t understand the ties back to Geordie Shore for the wedding when she’s tried SO hard to distance herself from the entire enterprise. Just seems a little strange to suddenly be piggy backing off it again for the wedding?’

Hitting back, Vicky slammed the comment as ‘silly’ and said it was ‘wild’ to reduce a region to a reality show.

She penned: ‘hey Kim, I’m just going to pop this here for some clarity. Whereas I have been really vocal about that fact that I struggled with my time on Geordie Shore and would prefer to move forward and be recognised for something that l’ve done in the last 15 years- I have never once disparaged the show itself or the cast.

‘My feelings towards it are based on the person I became while taking part- I hold myself accountable for my actions.

‘However MTV, weirdly, did not create the term ‘Geordie.’ It is an informal label used to describe someone from tyneside. Since I am born and raised in wallsend- essentially 2 minutes from the banks of the river Tyne- I am and always will be a geordie. A very proud one. Therefore I am having a ‘Big Fat Geordie Wedding.’

‘There are around a million people living in Newcastle alone who all call themselves Geordies, and not one of them is ‘piggy backing’ off Geordie Shore.

‘They’re referring to themselves the same way we’ve been referred to for YEARS. This comment is silly but it’s also wild to reduce an entire region down to a piece of reality tv. Newcastle is more than that. The north is more that than. And actually so am I.

‘So hopefully that’s cleared things up and I hope you enjoy the show on Wednesday night. Lots of love, a proud geordie.’

Vicky has kept her followers fully involved in her wedding preparations after Ercan first popped the question while on holiday in Dubai in February 2022.

She has teased her upcoming series, telling The Mirror what fans could expect to see from the preparations stage.

She said: ‘You’ll see bits of it on the show. There are moments where I’m really excited and, you know, just really invested in the planning element. And then there’s times where I’m quite stressed out trying to balance it all. But I think that’s also being a woman.’

The reality star had previously invited a camera crew to follow her wedding planning, but it ended in disaster and heartbreak.

The deal was signed, the cameras were rolling in 2018 and the wedding was only a few months away when she found out her then fiancé John Noble had been kissing other women.

Speaking about the devastating moment, she told the Mail’s Weekend Magazine: ‘I was heartbroken. This time is very different.

‘I felt in some way inadequate, unlovable. I threw myself into work and tried to portray an image of strength, but inside I was crumbling.’

Explaining the decision to do it all over again when it had gone so wrong before, Vicky said: 'Ercan is different from anyone I've ever gone out with. That's why we work'

Friends and family rallied round but there was nowhere to hide, and she recalled: ‘I remember the TV crew being with us and not knowing what to do. I basically broke down.’

‘We turned the wedding documentary into a break-up show. It showed young women you don’t have to stay with the wrong person.’

‘I got loads of lovely messages off lasses saying, “Thank you for helping me see that I could walk away.”‘

Explaining the decision to do it all over again when it had gone so wrong before, Vicky said: ‘It wasn’t a decision that I or Ercan made lightly. Weddings are really expensive. If a TV channel wants to help pay for it, I’d be a fool to say no.’

She went on: ‘Secondly, I’ve lived my whole life pretty much in front of cameras. Being on TV has given me security, pride and things I and the family never would have had without it.’

And explaining her third reason, she explained: ‘Ercan is different from anyone I’ve ever gone out with. That’s why we work.

‘I think our relationship is quite progressive. Ercan at the moment is like a stay-at-home dog dad. He looks after the house. He does bits and pieces of work. He’s content to support me and let me shine. I’ve never had that before.’

Vicky added: ‘Also, wouldn’t it be nice to say to our kids in ten or 20 years, “Come and watch the wedding. Look how fit your mam used to be!”‘
