SNL accused of being anti-British with dig at Amiee Lou Woods’ teeth – as writers are blasted for using a ‘tired trope’ in ‘unfunny’ skit that ‘made no sense’

Georgia May Jagger has led a wave of Brits leaping to the defence of Aimee Lou Wood after her teeth were cruelly mocked in a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Since Aimee, 31, spoke out about the criticism she has been inundated with support from followers and celebrity peers who have told her to embrace her unique smile.

Among those was model Georgia, 33, with the fellow Brit – who is famed her own gap-toothed smile – writing on Instagram: ‘@aimeelouwood is gorgeous’, six weeks before the SNL skit.

For weeks, Aimee’s teeth have been a hot topic of discussion, with the actress admitting the conversation has been fuelled by Americans who learnt of the star from watching The White Lotus.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show last month, the British beauty confessed she was shocked by the discourse, admitting: ‘I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having. The Americans can’t believe it.

‘They’re being lovely [and there’s] videos of orthodontists coming up analysing my teeth. They dissect my teeth and say, “What’s wrong with them?” and at the end go, “But I don’t think she should change a thing!”‘

She concluded: ‘It’s a real full circle moment after being bullied and now people are clapping.’

Fellow chat show guest Stephen Fry praised the actress for not succumbing to peer pressure and changing her smile, noting: ‘All the roles you’ve played that I’ve seen you in, [your teeth have] actually enhanced.’

Referencing a Vanity Fair article, he went on: ‘They wrote about your teeth, which sounds like a small thing but you’ve obviously made an enormous amount of people happy by not changing your teeth, which are… you know, they’re notable.

‘Like my bent nose but yours are better,’ he continued, ‘and you obviously had a time where some people would’ve said to you: “Oh you should get those corrected” but you stood up for them and they’re part of your character; all the roles you’ve played that I’ve seen you in, they’ve actually enhanced.’

In February, Aimee confessed that she thought her unique appearance would stop her breaking through into Hollywood.

‘It’s the teeth,’ she explained. ‘Like, no Americans have my teeth. They just don’t. I’d have to get veneers. Because… I think that genuinely is like one of the things.’

While some may consider the American fascination with British teeth to be a stereotype, research proved that it isn’t an exaggeration.

In 2020, findings uncovered by OnBuy.com, using data from SEO tools Ahrefs and SEMrush, found that people from the US are interested in the state of dental hygiene in the UK, with one common search being: ‘Why do British people have bad teeth?’

While some simply left it at that, others went one step further and questioned why Britons have ‘crooked’ teeth.

Last week, Aimee hit out at SNL for their ‘mean and unfunny’ for their skit – which saw comedian Sarah Sherman wear huge prosthetic teeth while parodying Aimee.

Since then a host A-list stars have jumped to her defence.

UK vs US: Who has the best teeth?

In 2015 a study set out to discover which nation really did have the ‘better’ teeth – with surprising results.

A team from both sides of the Atlantic compared data for thousands of patients from the English Adult Dental Health Survey and the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

They looked for examples of missing teeth, adults’ perceptions of their oral health and the effect of poor teeth on daily life such as pain, difficulty eating and avoiding smiling.

The study showed the average number of missing teeth was higher in the US (7.31) than in England (6.97).

Americans were also more likely to suffer poor dental health due to socio-economic factors.

The University College London researchers wrote: ‘There is a longstanding belief in the United States that the British have terrible teeth.

‘This view dates back at least 100 years, with toothpaste adverts extolling the virtues of American smiles.’

But they concluded: ‘We’ve shown the oral health of Americans is not better than the English.’

The light-hearted study was included in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal.

I hate this so much,’ Jameela Jamil wrote on her Instagram Story. ‘It’s the least interesting or memorable thing about this brilliant actor. Our next Olivia Coleman. Hilarious, deep, vulnerable, and relentlessly loveable.

‘We make fun of the assimilation of women and then mercilessly obsess over anyone with any slightly alternative features from whatever bullsh** AI standard we have allowed, as women, to take hold of this world.’

In a second post, Jameela added: ‘I also think she’s so f***ing beautiful and love her face so much and wouldn’t want her to look any different.’

Saturday Night Live have reportedly since issued an apology to Aimee after she slammed the ‘mean’ sketch.

On Monday, the actress appeared to be overwhelmed by the recent drama, breaking down in tears on the street at midday and being consoled by fellow actor Ralph Davis.

While Ralph managed to put a smile back on her face, it was clear Aimee still had the SNL scandal on her mind as she took to Instagram with a slew of Stories posted continuously until 1am.

At 8pm she shared a post from The White Lotus’ official account in which she discussed how hard it had been to watch back the tragic closing scenes of the season three finale.

The post, which was captioned: ‘Wellness may come with temporary aches’, saw her admit the final episode made her ‘sob a lot’ and that creator Mike White made her ‘sit in an achy place’ during filming.

She went on to repost messages of support from friends and followers, including West End star and CBB contestant Marisha Wallace, who urged her to ‘stay you and stay true’.

Another message from a friend noted that ‘people are jealous and don’t know where to put the energy, so it comes down to playground bullying, pointing at the one thing they themselves feel scared they couldn’t pull off if they possessed it’

Aimee also commented on a post by Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine that shared a series of her quotes.

They noted: ‘Aimee’s speaking up about both avenues’ parallels to the bullying she faced in her past distracting from the performance she invested seven months of mental and physical work into — so let’s celebrate her incredible talent AND leave space for Aimee to speak her truth beyond the roles she plays on screen.’

Among the quotes they reposted were: ‘There’s a full-circle thing about the thing that you’re bullied for is now the thing that everyone’s being like, “I love your teeth!”

‘But then it does get to the point where you’re like, “Can we stop f****ing talking about it?” Because then it actually ends up feeling a bit similar…’

Another quote read: ‘Accepting who I actually am, I need therapy, stability, consistency. Maybe I can’t do jobs that take me away from home for seven months. And maybe that’s OK.’

Aimee was quick to comment: ‘I appreciate this so much.’

The Stockport, Manchester native has previously spoken about how her emotions ‘simmer just below the surface’ and revealed she used to ‘mask’ her symptoms of ADHD.

Aimee’s campaign against SNL began on Sunday.

That same day, however, Aimee’s on-screen love interest Walton Goggins shared a since-deleted post to his Instagram Stories praising the sketch.

The actor, 53, raved that the skit was a ‘SMASHING’ success, and he included a message for Jon Hamm, who appeared in the sketch as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

‘Jon I knew I was miscast,’ he wrote to the Mad Men star, who imbued the vaccine-skeptic politician with some of his White Lotus character Rick’s personality.

Walton went so far as to also comment ‘Hahahahahhahaha Amazzzingggg’ on the official SNL Instagram account, according to Page Six.

His shocking reaction to the sketch that offended his costar comes amid rumors swirling within fan circles claiming that he and Aimee are feuding.

Fans have cited the Justified star’s once-effusive praise for his costar, which mysteriously dried up as the White Lotus was wrapping up its third season.

Since then, fans have even noticed that the two stars no longer follow each other on Instagram, and Walton appeared to have tagged several of his co-stars in behind-the-scenes photos he posted from the series — except for Aimee, whom he shared many of his scenes with.

Although Aimee doesn’t appear to follow Walton’s personal account, she still follows his eyeglasses page, Goggle Glasses.

On Reddit, users struggled to understand why Walton and Aimee didn’t follow each other, with one person writing, ‘I feel like no one is talking about the falling out of them?’.

In response to being mocked, Aimee took to her Instagram Story to slam SNL and address rumors about HBO.

After the actress went viral for her takedown of the ‘mean and unfunny’ skit, she claimed that SNL had reached out to extend an olive branch.

Alongside a selfie distorted to make her eyes and mouth larger, she penned: ‘I’ve had apologies from SNL’.

In the sketch, named The White Potus, it imagined the Trump family and various political figures on holiday at the famous retreat.

Goggins’ character Rick was reimagined as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who was seen on a rambling rant debating they take ‘all the fluoride out of the water’.

The camera then cut to Aimee Lou’s character Chelsea – played by Sarah – with exaggerated buck teeth, who exclaimed: ‘Fluoride? What’s that?’

In response, Aimee Lou took aim at the ‘cheap’ joke, as she wrote: ‘Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the p**s for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?’

Aimee Lou continued: ‘Last thing I’ll say on the matter. I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the p**s out of when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth.

‘I don’t mind caricature – I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/ Chelsea was the only one punched down On… Okay end of.’

To conclude, she shared a comment from a fan that read: ‘It was a sharp and funny skit until it suddenly took a screeching turn into 1970’s misogyny’, she added: ‘This sums up my view’.

Earlier in the day, Aimee Lou shared more thoughts on the matter, admitting: ‘Whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny,’ she told her followers.

After noting she was feeling ‘righteous’ but ‘might delete’ her post later, fans encouraged her not to remove it.

‘Don’t delete it, one comment read. ‘It was mean and unfunny and saying it out loud removes their power.

‘You’re unreal in every way, I have a big gap in my teeth and an overbite and you’ve genuinely made me feel so much better about myself.

‘I was going to spend thousands on fixing it all which I’m not doing now because I look at you and think how gorgeous you look so why not try and apply that logic to myself,’ they concluded.

Another commenter wrote, ‘I agree- everyone else in that parody was a political figure who was being mocked.

‘The only character who wasn’t political was Chelsea, and they were clearly just taking the piss out of your appearance/accent, which is extremely c***y and uncalled for.’

Earlier, she clarified that ‘nobody at HBO called’ her ‘ugly.’

‘That was my own paranoid thought’ she explained, referring to a recent interview, which she says was misconstrued.

The star continued: ‘Nobody at HBO would say that. My point in the article was about how our mind plays tricks on us. Please read carefully before getting angry for me.’

‘So to conclude today’s rant: @hbo – kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone. @nbcsnl – mean.’

In a recent interview with British GQ, Aimee Lou explained that White Lotus creator Mike White had to ‘fight’ to cast her, which made her feel insecure.

She continued: ‘When someone (not a producer) told me Mike fought for me it was said in a nice way.

‘I just spiraled about it because of my own imposter syndrome. That was my point. Just really wanted to clear that up because hbo have been nothing but super supportive.

In the GQ article, Aimee Lou dove into the insecurity, saying, ‘My little head goes: ‘HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I’m ugly.”

‘Mike had to say, ‘Please let me have the ugly girl!’ That was the thing that was in my head,’ she continued.

Elsewhere in the interview, Aimee Lou spoke about the interest in her natural overbite and gapped buck teeth, which she worried had progressed to the point that it was stealing attention from her performance.

She worried that her teeth were now seen by some White Lotus fans as something ‘goofy’ that she hadn’t yet had ‘fixed.’

‘It makes me really happy that it’s symbolizing rebellion and freedom, but there’s a limit,’ she said.

‘The whole conversation is just about my teeth, and it makes me a bit sad because I’m not getting to talk about my work.

‘They think it’s nice because they’re not criticizing,’ she said of those focused on her smile, before pausing and suggesting that the whole discussion might be tied in with sexism.

‘And, I have to go there… I don’t know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much? It’s still going on about a woman’s appearance,’ she added.

Aimee Lou has been praised online for leaving her buck teeth natural, instead of caving into the artificial beauty standards of Hollywood.

During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, the actress marveled: ‘I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having. Americans can’t get over them.

‘Even the way White Lotus fans are talking about me and my teeth — that I don’t have veneers or Botox — it feels a bit rebellious.’
