Sean Dyche sacked as Everton manager by new owners hours before FA Cup tie

Sean Dyche has been sacked by Everton after almost two years as manager, hours before the club host Peterborough in an FA Cup third-round tie.

Everton have been under new ownership since The Friedkin Group completed its takeover on 19 December, since when Everton have drawn twice and lost twice, scoring one goal.

Everton are one point above the relegation zone and Dyche admitted on Tuesday that the owners were right to be exploring managerial options because he had not won enough games this season.

Leighton Baines and Séamus Coleman will take temporary charge. Dyche replaced Frank Lampard as the manager on 30 January 2023 and has twice steered the club clear of relegation, last season despite a points deduction.

Everton said in a statement: “Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as senior men’s first-team manager with immediate effect. Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the club.

“The process to appoint a new manager is under way and an update will be provided in due course. Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Séamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”
