Police Scotland have opened a probe after Rangers striker Vaclav Cerny was alleged to have sprayed opposition fans with water after the Gers’ weekend victory over Celtic. The incident is said to have happened in the closing minutes of the match after Hamza Igamane scored Rangers’ late winner.

Cerny celebrated with his team-mate Igamane after what proved to be the winner. Celtic had battled back from 2-0 down, with Reo Hatate equalising 15 minutes from time, only for the visitors to have the last word.

Czech forward Cerny, on loan from Wolfsburg, has 17 goals to his name this term. On Sunday, though, it was his actions on the touchline with upset Celtic.

“Celtic Football Club has received complaints regarding the policing operation concerning yesterday’s match, specifically events away from Celtic Park,” Celtic wrote in a statement published on Monday. “We are reviewing our supporters’ concerns and will be looking into these issues.

“It is important that these matters are addressed and the Club will be engaging in discussions with supporters and Police Scotland to understand the circumstances and events. With regards to the match at Celtic Park, we can also confirm that the Club has raised concerns regarding members of the away team engaging with Celtic supporters with the relevant authorities.”

Police Scotland has now issued an update of its own. “Officers received information and enquiries are ongoing,” the body told Sky Sports.

Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande put Rangers 2-0 up at Celtic Park, only for Daizen Maeda and Hatate to bring the hosts level before Igamane’s winner. Despite the defeat, Celtic remain 13 points clear of their rivals at the top.

Rangers are still battling for silverware in Europe, having secured a penalty shootout victory over Fenerbahce in the Europa League round of 16. They will face Athletic Club in the quarter-finals, and defender Dujon Sterling wants to build on a big week.

“It was a big one, especially after this week and the Fenerbahce game as well,” Sterling told club media after the win against Celtic. “It is the first time since I have been here that we have come and beat them, so it is a great feeling and we had the fans back as well to give us that extra boost.

“We watched them, and we thought let’s try something different, we were more aggressive, and they didn’t like that and we went two goals up. I think you could see the legs were getting tired doing 120 minutes during the week, but we dug deep, let the subs come on and do their thing and then Hamza got the winner with a great goal.”
