Rachel Zegler’s career on the brink: Insiders spill on actress’s deepest fears if her ‘woke’ Snow White flops… and say ‘it’s one massive headache after another’

For months, Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White has been embroiled in controversy. Now we are just days from the film’s release, and the Daily Mail can reveal that star Rachel Zegler is said to be feeling the pressure.

The actress, 23, previously faced sharp scrutiny after she slammed the original animated cartoon, 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as ‘extremely dated’ and ‘weird’. Then she was bashed for publicly stating that she wished President Trump and his supporters would ‘never know peace’.

Sources have now told the Daily Mail that Rachel knows her ‘future in Hollywood’ relies on Snow White being a success after she was ‘essentially blacklisted’ from movies due to her eyebrow-raising comments.

They said Zegler is considered a ‘liability’… so the outcome of Snow White could make or break the young star’s career.

An insider explained that the actress is aware that if the film ultimately fails, the failure will be attributed to her. But on the other hand, if it’s a massive box office hit, she could be spared.

‘If Snow White becomes a huge hit, Rachel Zegler will get a reprieve, but if it fails to muster any traction, the blame will be on her,’ they added.

‘Her future in Hollywood stands on the box office numbers for this film. Rachel understands that.

‘Everyone is rolling the dice right now. Rachel has everything to gain, and everything to lose. Hollywood is fickle and this is the perfect example.’

A second source described the movie as ‘one massive headache after another,’ adding that ‘everyone involved is over it’.

‘They thought that they were breaking new ground to create something everyone could love by making this more diverse,’ the source said. ‘But, $270 million dollars later, execs are terrified.’

The same source reiterated that Rachel needs Snow White to be a hit in order to salvage her reputation.

‘She has been essentially blacklisted by the industry which is sad given her massive talent,’ continued the insider.

‘Bosses want to just get this movie out there and be done with it. It will either be a massive success or one of Disney’s biggest losses.’

A Disney source has refuted this story, saying there is absolutely no basis for this claim.

Ever since it was revealed that the company would be remaking the much-loved classic, the new version has been shrouded in scandal – from a backlash over casting and disappointment over plot changes to arguments over whether or not Disney should include dwarfs in the remake and Rachel’s shocking comments.

People who see Snow White want to see the film they grew up with. The seven dwarfs are synonymous with this film,’ the source added.

‘Tampering with that was a huge mistake, so too was casting Rachel … She is now a liability.’

The fallout first began when Disney announced that Rachel, a Colombian-American star who is best known for portraying Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, would be starring as Snow White.

Traditionalists were unhappy that a Latina actress had been picked to portray the German character – since Snow White is famously described as the ‘fairest one of all’ with ‘skin as white as snow’ in the fairytale.

Things only got worse when Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, who has dwarfism, went on a fierce tirade against the movie, calling out Disney for pursuing a ‘backwards story’ about seven dwarfs.

‘Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but you’re still making that f***ing backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together,’ said the actor.

Soon after Dinklage’s outburst, the network announced that instead of using dwarfs, Snow White’s companions would be ‘magical creatures’.

But the decision only sparked more fury, especially from other actors who have dwarfism, who said Disney’s removal of the characters only took away a chance for people in their community to star in the film.

People became more outraged when Rachel started teasing a slew of changes to the plot, explaining that the original was decades old and needed an ‘update’.

She said it would focus much less on Snow White and the Prince’s love story, but rather, follow the Princess’s path to becoming a ‘leader’.

But her admission left many of the fairytale’s fans terrified that the new version would veer too far from the story they loved, while others accused Disney of making unnecessary changes in its attempt to be more ‘woke’.

The movie only became even murkier after a series of interviews that showed Rachel slamming the original story went viral.

Not only did she admit that she ‘hated’ the animated flick because she was ‘scared’ of it as a child, but she also branded the Prince a ‘stalker’.

In addition, a source told Page Six this week that Rachel refused to sing the beloved song Some Day My Prince Will Come from the 1937 Disney classic; instead the tune has been replaced with feminist anthem Waiting on a Wish.

An insider described her as ‘out of control’ and said Disney ‘doesn’t know what to do’ with her insistence on airing her progressive views.

Things got more confusing when Disney shared its first official look at Snow White last October – and it showed Rachel sitting in a cabin surrounded by seven CGI dwarfs.

Many were left confused by the dwarfs in the image – since the company had previously stated that it wouldn’t be using dwarfs at all.

Producers are said to have U-turned on their decision to include a diverse range of actors to play the dwarves after receiving backlash from Dinklage.

Amid all the scandals and PR nightmares surrounding the remake, it was revealed earlier this month that Disney decided to scale back the planned lavish premieres to a ‘handful’ of tightly controlled press events.

On Wednesday night, instead of being premiered at London’s Leicester Square, the launch of Snow White was dramatically moved to a remote castle in Segovia, north-west of Madrid.

Media outlets were not invited to the event and the public were banned from entering the castle.

Later this week, the cast is expected to attend a small pre-party and screening at Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theatre, but according to Variety, ‘coverage will be limited to photographers and a house crew.’

The film is tracking to make between $50-$56million in its opening weekend.
