Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen has shone for the Cherries since his arrival from Juventus but some fans have been left with some questions about his activities off of the pitch
Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen has been forced to deny he ‘smokes weed’ during an awkward interview. The defender featured on a podcast with influencer Papa Pincus during the international break.
And during the pair’s chat, the topic of marijuana came up, with the host asking the defender if he used the recreational drug due to his relaxed look on the pitch. Pincus asked: “It really seems to me like you are pretty medicated on weed. Do you smoke weed?”
After initially laughing at the question, Huijsen gave the truth behind his appearance. He said: “Basically, for everyone watching, I have sleepy eyes. I have it from my mum because my mum has sleepy eyes. I’m not high. I’m sorry, I’m not high. We’re not allowed to take weed, it’s doping control. I’m not high. It’s how I was born. I can’t do anything about it.”
Pincus then asked him about one particular incident where Huijsen appeared to have red eyes in a picture of him with a Premier League man-of-the-match award. But the 19-year-old insisted it was due to an inocuous incident on the pitch.

He added: “I got a ball in my eye. Someone shot and it went right in my eye. So I was even worse.” Some fans have taken to social media to criticise the line of questioning, albeit Pincus insists Huijsen did not mind.
Taking to X, he said: “Just an FYI for those allergic to light-hearted banter. We ran through all the questions beforehand, he loved this one. Sorry we didn’t ask him who has the AUX in the changing room or who’s the worst dressed teammate. He clearly saw the funny side, maybe you should too!”
Huijsen joined Bournemouth from Juventus in the summer and he has gone on to make 27 appearances across his debut campaign, while he has also made his debut for the Spanish national team. His performances have apparently garnered interest from Spanish side Real Madrid.
But the teenager is putting any transfer rumours to the back of his mind for now. Speaking on international duty, Huijsen said: “I’m not thinking about that right now. I’m thinking about ending the season well, and I hope I do.

“Then when the time comes, we’ll see. It makes you proud that such a big team is interested in you. I’ll keep working, and being humble.”
Elsewhere, Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has been full of praise for the youngster. Speaking after Huijsen’s debut, he said: “I think he is great news for Spanish football, for the national team, to see a player that is making his debut and playing with that self confidence, dealing with the pressure with so much spontaneity.
“I think this is great news, and I am thrilled to add a player to what we call our cause, our family. He’s also had a fantastic integration to the demands and responsibilities we have requested from him. I insist he has fantastic personal behaviour, and football-wise, he’s extraordinary.”
