Former Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams will learn his fate on May 9 after pleading guilty to a dangerous driving charge that could see him required to spend two years in prison.
The 24-year-old, who made his debut for the Red Devils in 2019, crashed his car at 99mph ‘with a balloon in his mouth’ while accompanied by a young woman in August 2023 and driving on the A34 in Cheshire.
While he joined the club five years ago, making 21 appearances for them, he is not the only member of his family to become a sporting star.
His cousin Zelfa Barrett – who grew up in the same inner-city suburb of Harpurhey as Williams – has made a name for himself as a professional boxer.
Sports fans subsequently took to social media to express their surprise on discovering that Williams and Barrett are related.
Posting to X, formerly Twitter, one user wrote: ‘Random fact- Brandon Williams is related to Zelfa Barrett!’

A second added: ‘Still can’t believe Brandon Williams, Zelfa Barrett and Lyndon Arthur are all family’.
Commenting on a picture of the two together, another user observed: ‘Brandon Williams looks more of a boxer than his cousin’.
Zelfa is trained by his uncle Pat Barrett – who lost to American boxer Manning Galloway in the 1992 fight for the WBO welterweight title.
Another of Williams’ and Barrett’s cousins is boxer Lyndon Arthur, who won the IBO light-heavyweight title in 2023 after defeating Braian Nahuel Suarez.
In February, Zelfa was upset in his home city of Manchester by Jazza Dickens in a fight that was decided by a unanimous decision.
Prior to his dangerous driving charge, Williams spent a season on loan at Norwich City before being part of the Ipswich Town squad that gained promotion to the Premier League last campaign.
Williams was also part of England U20 and U21 but has never received a senior cap for the Three Lions.
He left United following the expiry of his contract last summer and has been without a club ever since and it remains to be seen whether he will play at the top level again.
