White supremacist network slapped with sanctions
A white supremacist online network has been hit with unprecedented counter-terrorism sanctions as part of a federal government crackdown on antisemitism.
Terrogram is an online network that uses encrypted messaging apps to promote white supremacist and antisemitic content and advocates for attacks against minority groups, police, public figures, political figures and journalists.
The sanctions, announced by Foreign Minister Penny Wong this morning, make it a criminal offence to use or deal with the assets, or make assets available on Terrogram.
Penalties include up to 10 years in prison and heavy fines.
It’s the first time Australia has imposed counter-terrorism financing sanctions on an entirely online entity.
👋 Good morning
Howdy partners. Welcome back to another week on the politics live blog.
If you’re one of the many people (myself included) that thought last year’s mad dash to pass 32 bills in one night in Labor’s version of an everything must go sale was the last we’d see of parliament this term, then do I have news for you.
After kicking off the year campaigning around the country, politicians will be making the trek back to Canberra with parliament resuming again this week.
I’ll be here to guide you through the day alongside the best and the brightest from the ABC Parliament House team.
