Live updates on the major ASX indices:

Aussie dollar drops again against the USD

Its down back around 62 US cents, despite firm jobs figures yesterday out in Australia.

CBA’s currency analysts notes that this is still a “bit higher” than over the last week.

….because of a lower USD and an improvement in risk sentiment now that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire deal.  The reaction of USD/CNH to China’s December data dump and Q4 24 GDP could have some spillovers to AUD/USD today.

Bitcoin hits $US100,000 again ahead of Trump’s reign

The cryptocurrency is rallying again ahead of Trump’s inauguration next Tuesday 21 January (US time).

Incumbent President Trump is seen as supportive of cryptocurrencies and they’ve been rallying since his election.

How much Aussie parents are giving their kids for property

The “bank of Mum and Dad” is now a common moniker, and a new survey by UBS has found it’s very much a real trend.

The survey of 1000 people asked people how much they’re getting off their family or giving away to them.

About 40% said they’d given or recieved in 2024.

(UBS)

Curiously (and perhaps worryingly) more than a quarter of those who said they got cash off family last year said they used it for mortgage repayments.

Another quarter said they got cash to buy property.

And some are getting huge chunks of cash above $200,000.

(UBS)

Have you gifted cash to a loved on to help them get into the property market or…. keep them from defaulting on their loan?
