Albanese offers apprentices $10,000 to build homes
The PM is up at the National Press Club today, almost exactly a year since he went there to unveil his stage three tax cut changes.
This time, the announcement is not so dramatic. But there is an announcement: a $10,000 support payment for apprentices who work in residential construction while they learn a trade.
Paid out in five instalments of $2,000, the PM will pitch it as a double whammy of supporting skills and helping to meet the 1.2 million new homes target, since the worker shortage is one of the major barriers.
There’s money for just over 60,000 apprentices, but a similar scheme in the energy sector struggled to attract those numbers
👋 Good morning
Hi friends! It’s been a while. How was your summer? I hope it was good.
The ABC politics live blog is back baby. Why today, I hear you ask. Well, it’s because Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be at the National Press Club around midday for his first big address of the year.
It’s been a bit of weird old summer for the PM, who clocked back into work early this year to get a head start on the shadow election campaign.
He’ll be hoping today’s speech can act as the reset he needs to set the scene as we head into the campaign proper in the coming months.
I’ll be here with you to guide you though the day. Let’s get into it pals.
