Live: Liberal senator hails Ley leadership as a ‘new era’ for party

Ley ‘deserves a fair red hot crack at this’: Canavan

Nationals senator Matt Canavan was also out and about this morning, insisting Sussan Ley deserved to have a “fair red hot crack” at the being opposition leader.

“I think Sussan will do a good job. I remember three years ago. Everyone saying Peter Dutton would be on death row, and he made it,” he told Nine.

“Sussan deserves a fair red hot crack at this …  And she’s got enormous parliamentary experience … She’ll take the fight up. I’m sure. That’s what we’ve got to do. We’ve just got to we’ve just got to have the fight to give ourselves a fighting chance.

“So I wish her all the best. As you say, it’s a historic moment. As the
first woman. And I think she’ll do well.”

Canavan put himself forward for the Nationals leadership earlier this week in protest against the Coalition’s commitment to net zero. He fell short.

It’s not the only thing the senator has lost this week. He told Nine his “terrible week” has also included misplacing his red Yeti water bottle.

Ley’s appointment marks ‘new era’ for Liberals: Hume

Jane Hume has declared Sussan Ley’s election as opposition leader marks the beginning of a “new era” for the Liberal Party.

Ley narrowly defeated opponent Angus Taylor for the top job during a meeting of the Liberal party room in Canberra on Tuesday.

But the Liberal frontbencher was asked if the new leader would be dusting off the election post-mortem Hume authored following the 2022 election loss.

“Inevitably, the previous reviews will be considered,” she told Sunrise.

“But this really is a new era for the Liberal Party. It’s very exciting to have our first female leader at the helm and of
courseSussan Ley brings such a wealth of experience, both personal and professional.”

She described it as an “exciting time” for the party, and says the Liberals will now “reflect on what worked and what didn’t during an election”.

“But most importantly, it gives us a chance to see what it is that we can do in the future to make sure that we deliver on our values and reflect modern Australia,” she says.

Future of Coalition must be settled before shadow frontbench can be appointed

The future of the partnership between Liberals and Nationals will need to be settled before Sussan Ley can appoint a shadow ministry and begin the task of negotiating policies and soothing bitter divisions within her party.

Ley declined to give a timeline for finalising her frontbench after she was chosen as opposition leader by a narrow margin on Tuesday.

But she signalled she reached across the party and appointed those who supported Angus Taylor in the leadership ballot.

Taylor evaded the media pack on his way out of Tuesday’s party room meeting but his intended running mate, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, fired an early warning shot on his behalf, saying he must not be relegated to the backbench.
