Live: Dan Houston looming as centrepiece as AFL trade period officially opens

The deals expected to go through today

There’s always much anticipation about who will be the first completed move to take place during the trade period.

According to Nine’s Tom Morris, the first players officially on the move are expected to be Alex Neal-Bullen and Jack Darling, to Adelaide and North Melbourne, respectively.

The latest on Clayton Oliver

Would Geelong still go ahead with a trade for Clayton Oliver despite the fact that Melbourne have shut down trade speculation and moves for both Oliver and Bailey Smith may put them over the salary cap?

Hi Adam,

Melbourne is at least publicly talking tough when it comes to Clayton Oliver, but there is a lot to play out here you’d think.

The fact that they were shopping him on the downlow prompted Oliver himself to meet with the Cats prior to the trade period.

There is a lot of public posturing that goes on during these two weeks as clubs haggle to get what they want while also trying to appease their fans and members.

Geelong will definitely have to get creative to bring both Oliver and Bailey Smith in, but they definitely will not have given up on acquiring the star midfield duo this early in the trade period.

Kane Cornes believes the dream of Oliver in the hoops is still alive as well.

“I still think it’s alive. Once you’ve been sold the dream of going to play for Geelong. It’s going to be hard for him to go back,” he told AFL Trade Radio this morning.

What is the right price for Dan Houston?

Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston looms as one of the main dominos in this year’s trade period.

Houston wants a move back to his home state of Victoria and reportedly has Carlton, Collingwood and North Melbourne vying for his signature.

The Power are rightly asking for a hefty trade bounty for their star man, who has three years left to run on his contract.

Port is believed to want two first-round picks for Houston, but according to SEN’s Sam Edmund, that might be a tough ask.

“You’re not going to get two first rounders for Dan Houston,” Edmund told AFL Trade Radio this morning.
