Is the New Dyson Air Wrap iD the Lazy Girl’s Answer to Perfectly Styled Hair? – POPSUGAR Australia

When it comes to hair tools, I’ve tried them all. As a beauty editor for over a decade, I have always had a special relationship with my hair and love nothing more than sitting at home styling it. For me, it is a little bit of self-care that I find soothing and the distraction of using both my hands, away from scrolling on my phone, always helps me relax.

Over the last few years, I’ve been particularly fond of hot air tools like the GHD Duet Blowdry and the Shark FlexStyler 5 in 1, not only because I find my hair is a lot healthier using less heat, but as a time-starved mum, it has cut my drying time in half.

Although I have to admit I have often struggled to use all the different heads, in particular the curling wand. Made famous by the original Dyson Air Wrap, the curling barrel that uses air to wrap each section has become the most standout tool. If used correctly, it can create the most perfect professional-looking curls.

I have never been able to perfect the curl myself and, on the rare occasion I have managed to get it to work, it has never lasted for more than 20 minutes. Which is why I was intrigued to try the new Dyson Air Wrap iD multi-styler and dryer Straight+Wavy, (£430, was £480). The difference with this tool is that users are able to to connect it to their phone via bluetooth and it controls how long they use the curling barrel depending on their hair type. Think AI for hair styling, so I had to give it a go.

Read on to find out if I managed to curl my hair properly and if I think the Dyson Air Wrap iD multi-styler and dryer Straight+Wavy is worth its hefty price tag.

  • How to Use the Dyson Air Wrap iD Multi-styler and Dryer Straight+Wavy

In theory, this Dyson Air Wrap iD works the same as the original, however, it’s the connection to the app that’s the real game changer when it comes to creating curls. When you set up your profile on the app, it will ask questions about your hair type, desired styling outcome – for example less frizz or more volume – as well as your skill level. This will then create the automatic curl programme for your hair. As I struggle with the wrapping part of the curl wand, I inputted ‘beginner’ as this gives a longer time to wrap the hair – around nine seconds – which becomes shorter the more skilled you are.

Once you have set up your profile, which takes a couple of minutes, rough dry your hair to about 80-90%. I like to use the round brush at the roots to give my hair volume and then rough dry the rest. On a side note, I love the round brush, this is my everyday tool of choice as it gives my hair a bouncy blown-out finish in a few minutes.

Before you attempt to curl your hair, always section it off, otherwise, you will find that you have hair blowing in all directions and this is when it is most likely to get tangled and caught in the tool. I take small sections, around two inches, and then place the tool in a vertical position as I hold the hair in the mid-section.

There is an air direction arrow at the top of the barrel, so switch it depending on which way you want your curl to go. Once in position, push the button upwards to activate the iD curl. This will then activate the automatic programme you’ve set for your hair type and will automatically switch from wrapping mode, to styling and then cooling. Once it is finished, it will switch off, so there is no need for you to think about how long to hold it or when to change it to the cool setting. Repeat this all over your hair.

What I Like About the Dyson Air Wrap iD Multi-styler and Dryer Straight+Wavy

Hands up who uses the cool shot for the first few curls and then gets bored and forgets? Yep, me too. I always start off with good intentions, but half way through I tend to get a bit lazy and skimp on the cool shot to save time. The result? Curls that drop before I’ve even left the house. This system does the cooling shot for you thanks to the iD function which programmes the tool to do the work, which I have found is the key to making my curls last longer.

Once you have used one of these tools, it can be quite difficult to go back to a regular hair dryer as it dries much quicker and is so much lighter to use. I also love that I don’t need an additional hair brush to style my hair, which is great when you’re in a rush or always losing hairbrushes like me. Another aspect I adore is that once it’s switched off, it’s off automatically. There’s no need to worry about whether I’ve accidentally left the tool on, like my straighteners or tongs – another major plus for someone who is constantly in a rush and a bit forgetful.

What to Consider Before Buying the Dyson Air Wrap iD Multi-styler and Dryer Straight+Wavy

Do you need it? Like really need it? I would say a purchase like this is not one you make on a whim. It is big money, there is no denying it. Unless you style your hair all the time or want to save money on regular blow-dries, then this might not be for you. It is a luxury item, and although it is a lovely product that can really improve your hair, it is not worth getting into debt over.

However, if you’re on the hunt for a new hair tool and prepared to spend the cash then this is hands down the best of its type. Dyson knows exactly what it’s doing when it comes to air wrap technology and the addition of the iD button makes this one of the simplest tools I have ever tried as it does all the thinking for you.

Where Is the Dyson Air Wrap iD Multi-styler and Dryer Straight+Wavy Available?
