Giants target Aaron Rodgers after Matthew Stafford extends Rams deal

Matthew Stafford committing his future to the LA Rams has left the New York Giants weighing up a potential move for Aaron Rodgers, according to reports.

Adam Schefter revealed on Friday that Stafford has agreed a restructured deal with the Rams, coming as a blow to the Giants amid their search for a new quarterback.

It also rules out a potential move for Rodgers, who had been tipped to replace Stafford at SoFi Stadium if he departed for New York this offseason.

Yet in light of that huge development from Los Angeles, Schefter now claims Giants officials are looking at ‘all veteran quarterback options’ – which includes Rodgers.

The 41-year-old is heading for free agency after being released by rival New York franchise the Jets, with whom he spent a miserable two years before being deemed surplus to requirements by new head coach Aaron Glenn.

Rodgers, who missed all but five snaps of his debut campaign with the Jets after tearing his Achilles tendon, has been contemplating retirement after going 5-12 in New York last season but is yet to announce his decision.

And as he weighs up whether to continue his playing career, reports emerged earlier this week claiming he already offered his services to the Giants.

Rodgers is said to be plotting to stay at MetLife Stadium, according to Mike Florio, which would prove a no-brainer logistically given he already lives in the area.

Now he is being seriously considered by the Giants as they look to solve their crisis at quarterback, having cut ties with Daniel Jones back in November before alternating between backups Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock.

DeVito is the only quarterback on their books heading into the 2025 season, meaning head coach Brian Daboll needs to find a new starter over the coming months.

Rodgers recently issued a wish list for his next franchise, calling for his future NFL home to be ‘good’ and to want him.

However, he may be backtracking on the first demand if he wants to join the Giants, given their 3-14 record was worse than the Jets.

Rodgers moved to New York in 2023 after completing a stunning move from the Green Bay Packers, only to suffer a season-ending injury minutes into his highly-anticipated Jets debut against the Buffalo Bills.

He finally returned amid high hopes for the team in 2024, only for the Jets to spiral into crisis following the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh.

Interim Jeff Ulbrich failed to make an impact at MetLife Stadium, with Rodgers producing a string of underwhelming displays as the team were eliminated from playoff contention at the start of December.

Stafford, meanwhile, had faced an uncertain future in LA after the Rams fell in a very snowy NFC Divisional round playoff game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

But now, after meeting with Rams leadership this morning, the 37-year-old is set to stay with the team – despite the fact that he might end up losing his top receiver in Cooper Kupp.

Stafford was wanted by multiple other teams – with rumors suggesting the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Las Vegas Raiders were interested in his services as well as the Giants.
