Controversial footy great Wayne Carey is caught on video starting a VERY different new career

Former North Melbourne star Wayne Carey appears to be dipping his toes into a new career venture.

Carey is widely regarded as one of the greatest footy players to have graced the game, guiding the Kangaroos to two premiership titles before leaving the club in 2001. He would hang up his boots in 2004 following a spell with the Crows, before going on to work with Carlton as a skills coach and later enjoyed several successful roles working in media.

Carey has worked as a commentator on Friday night football, appeared on panels on Channel Seven and has also been employed as a columnist for The Age.

The former half-forward, who was also voted as the AFL’s greatest-ever player in a comprehensive list of the league’s best players, was also a regular fixture on Triple M’s The Rush Hour but was dismissed by the station in 2022, and from his roles with Channel Seven and The Age.

Carey, though, appears to be taking steps into the real estate industry.

The ex-Kangaroos half-forward was seen in a video published on YouTube on Thursday by Mark O’Brien Real Estate promoting the sale of a luxury home in Heathcote Junction, Victoria.

The sprawling home is situated at 95N Mountain Road and is on the market for around $1.8m-$1.98m and comes with its own pub and outdoor spa.

Carey steps into shot to introduce the property and is seen walking down the drive towards the five-bedroom property that also comes with a self-contained bungalow.

Carey, who kicked 727 goals in 272 games throughout his professional career was wowed by the splendour of the home, which is being listed by O’Brien Real Estate consultant John Rombotis.

The former North Melbourne star described the home as ‘unique’ before going on to add: ‘I keep saying that word unique but that is exactly what this property is. This is one out of the box. Absolutely magnificent.’

The property is decked out with stunning wooden walls and ceilings, making it feel like you’re in a mountain lodge. There is also a stunning water feature situated inside the house, with the property being situated just one hour’s drive from Melbourne’s CBD.

It is not the first time that Carey has been seen working in the property world, though.

In 2023 the former footy star had also appeared in a video marketing a property in North Melbourne.

Carey has been involved in several controversies during his career, one of which included an alleged affair with a team-mate’s wife in 2002.

Recently, Carey had shocked controversial footy identity Sam Newman, by revealing that he had been making a change to his life.

The pair had been discussing their views on Welcome to Country on Newman’s ‘Are You Serious?’ podcast, when Carey made the comment.

Newman had begun to rant over Welcome to Country during the episode but Carey came back admitting that he was unbothered by the discussions. He stated he had been working with a professional who had made him realise that he shouldn’t worry about things he had no control over.

‘I know that you’re very passionate about this Sam, and I’ve listened to your commentary around it,’ Carey said.

‘I do a little bit of work with a lady, and I have done for some time now.

‘People, they might be surprised by this, but I continually work on myself.

‘I speak to a lady by the name of Tess, Tess Mallett is her name and she is a life coach. Not a psychologist, but there is psychology involved I guess.

‘It’s about working on yourself. And you know what? Things like, for instance, for yourself it is Welcome to Country and other things.

‘For me, do I think it should be done for everything, everywhere, every time? Probably not.

‘But does it bother me? No, it doesn’t.

‘There’s nothing really in the world – and again this is just purely because I’ve done work on myself in this area – that I get really upset with.

‘Whether it be an individual or something like Welcome to Country, whatever it may be, I just allow people to have their own emotions about it.

‘I don’t judge you for your view on it, but I don’t let things upset me.’
