Amber recently opened up on feeling both ‘relief and sadness’ following her ADHD diagnosis during an appearance on Good Morning Britain.

The influencer opened up on how her undiagnosed ADHD affected her post-Love Island life before she was finally diagnosed at the age of 24.

Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls about her diagnosis for the first time on live television, Amber said: ‘In school for me, I just thought I was a naughty child. I just thought I was always getting told off, I was always getting distracted, I was getting pulled out of lessons for all different kinds of things.

‘I wasn’t having a good time at school… Now looking back, I think “oh my god, that was what was happening” and it makes us feel a bit sad because it just went so under the radar and nobody noticed.’

She added: ‘I think I always functioned just a little bit differently to everyone else. Luckily in the past few years, it has been talked about a lot more and I just kept thinking to myself, “maybe you’ve got ADHD and that’s the reason that you’re struggling to get work done”.

‘So I went to get diagnosed and found out I had it and it was like a mixed feeling of relief and sadness. Sadness for all of the lost years that I was at school not knowing and being undiagnosed to then the relief of thinking “finally I have an answer as to why my brain works a little bit differently to everyone else”.’

Describing how her brain functions, she continued: ‘I’d say there’s two types of ADHD. There’s the hyperactive type which is the standard one that you would think about when you think about boys in school that have ADHD and then there is inattentive and I am more inattentive.

‘I feel like I can’t get a task done, I’m distracted very easily. It’s all those internal things – it doesn’t present itself very openly so it’s hard to notice.’

Revealing that she is now on medication for her diagnosis, Amber said: ‘I tried not to [take the medication] at first, for a lot of different reasons… But then I was just like “what have I got to lose?”, it might help me in my daily life and I just said ‘you know what, I’m going to do it’.’

She continued: ‘From diagnosis, everything just got a lot better because I was a lot gentler with myself. I knew to say “okay, you’ve got ADHD so maybe you can’t do that today” and I was able to manage it a bit better which was then just enhanced when I was on medication as well.

‘I felt like I could get more done, I was getting less distracted and overall my life just improved.’

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Amber first announced that she might be getting tested for ADHD in 2021, however she did not share the results.

She came out as gay in 2022, remarking that she couldn’t put herself through a relationship with a man anymore as they made her ‘feel ill’.

When asked why people were so up in arms after this, Amber replied: ‘Because I came from a very straight show.

‘I’ve never made it aware in people’s worlds that that could be a thing for me so I think people were like: “What? Where’s that come from?”‘

Her first public same-sex relationship was with Arsenal star Jen Beattie whom she dated from December 2022 to November 2023.

Amber won the fifth series of Love Island in 2019.

She split the £50k with Irish rugby player Greg O’Shea, with the two beating public favourites Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury.

The two split just five weeks after their July win, and Greg, 28, later said he regretted the break-up, which allegedly happened over text.

WHAT IS ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

It affects around five per cent of children in the US. Some 3.6 per cent of boys and 0.85 per cent of girls suffer in the UK.

Symptoms typically appear at an early age and become more noticeable as a child grows. These can also include:

  • Constant fidgeting
  • Poor concentration
  • Excessive movement or talking
  • Acting without thinking
  • Inability to deal with stress
  • Little or no sense of danger
  • Careless mistakes
  • Mood swings
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty organising tasks
  •  Continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones
  • Inability to listen or carry out instructions

Most cases are diagnosed between six and 12 years old. Adults can also suffer, but there is less research into this.

ADHD’s exact cause is unclear but is thought to involve genetic mutations that affect a person’s brain function and structure.

Premature babies and those with epilepsy or brain damage are more at risk.

ADHD is also linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, Tourette’s and epilepsy.

There is no cure.

A combination of medication and therapy is usually recommended to relieve symptoms and make day-to-day life easier.
