And ahead of Gavin and Stacey’s final ever episode on Christmas Day, star Robert, who plays Bryn’s nephew Jason, has told The Radio Times that fans may finally ‘learn something’ about the trip.

He said: ‘Almost invariably. People have their own versions of what they think happened. It’s the great mystery of Gavin & Stacey!

‘You never quite get to find out what happened… but I can’t say any more, because it’s possible you’ll learn something if you watch the finale.’

The Gavin and Stacey finale has already been tipped as the most-anticipated TV moment to air this Christmas, and is expected to draw in huge ratings when it hits screens.

Speaking about the show’s vast fanbase, Robert added: ‘I’m amazed the number of people who say their children love it.

‘I’ve been watching it again with my daughter and realised it’s actually quite rude. Families argue, laugh and make up. People see themselves in that.’

He went onto reflect on his final day of filming earlier this year, adding: ‘It was emotional, but I thought we finished ten years ago so this is a bonus.

‘The last day was a rollercoaster. When they called cut, everyone was in tears.’

Last week, the cast of Gavin And Stacey have recreated their iconic photo 17 years on, as anticipation builds for the last ever episode of the hugely popular BBC sitcom.

In a matter of weeks, viewers will tune in to watch what happened after Nessa (Ruth Jones), 58, proposed to Smithy (James Corden), 46, five years ago.

In a first look image released last week, Smithy and Nessa joined Gavin (Mathew Horne), 46, and Stacey (Joanna Page), 47, for a group shot.

As 17 years have passed since the original photo was taken, Smithy is no longer baby-faced and sports a beard.

Ruth character’s Nessa, meanwhile, is still a huge fan of leather, while Gavin and Stacey are in their 17th year of marriage.

Alongside the accompanying photo, major new plotlines were released with the BBC teasing viewers may finally find out what happened on Uncle Bryn’s fishing trip and that Gavin and Stacey’s sex life has hit a dry spell.

Teasing what’s in store, the BBC said: ‘It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened since then.

‘In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely.

‘Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

‘Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.

‘Join us on the journey to Barry and Billericay as we catch up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time and maybe find out what exactly did happen on that fishing trip.’

Filming recently wrapped up, with the cast bidding a final farewell to the show.

Production for the finale first began on September 2, and since then the cast have been pictured in a string of locations, including the famous Barry Island in Wales, which takes centre stage in the iconic comedy.

One of the main plot points that has emerged appears to be Nessa’s wedding, which could provide an answer to the cliffhanger that ended the 2019 special.

Stars Ruth and James filmed scenes for a wedding last month.

However, the cast themselves have yet to confirm if Smithy and Nessa will indeed get their happy ending.
